Pix4Dmapper 4.5 brings the improved quality of the dense point cloud and of 3D models.

Since the release of Pix4Dmapper 4.5 in March 2020, our users have had a chance to experience the fastest version of Pix4Dmapper yet. However, speed is not the only thing worth mentioning.

The new algorithms are optimized for oblique images, which typically capture the sky or other things in the background. The new version generates cleaner point clouds, which means less manual cleaning and better 3D textured meshes.

Taking oblique imagery to the next level

Before we get into the improvements, let’s cover two fundamental questions:

What is oblique imagery?

Generally speaking, oblique imagery is collected when the camera is not pointing directly at the ground. It contrasts with traditional nadir imagery, which is captured when the camera is pointing straight down at the ground.


What is oblique imagery used for?

Oblique aerial imagery can be used to generate a more complete three-dimensional (3D) model of an object or area of interest compared to nadir imagery.

Less is more

Less noise and fewer outliers will be generated in the final point cloud, which greatly impacts the 3D textured meshes automatic generation.

When images include sky, it isn’t uncommon to see points in the point cloud that are considered outliers or artifacts because they do not accurately represent the project area. Pix4Dmapper 4.5 handles this type of image content better.

Fewer outliers caused by ground points

Even if you do not include the sky in images, you might still have artifacts along the edges of a structure due to other elements in the background or on the ground. Pix4Dmapper 4.5 also addresses better this type of noise.

Better noise handling

With Pix4Dmapper 4.5 new algorithms, points that do not accurately represent reality are better handled. The point cloud will be more precise because only points with the highest confidence are reconstructed.
